THE MAGIC OF DENTAL IMPLANTOLOGY

Ever since Professor Branemark introduced the world to the scientific phenomenon of osseointegration, the world of dentistry has never been the same again. The quest to provide clinical solutions for edentulousness has only become more intensive, but has resulted in today’s solutions that are predictable and aesthetic. What has changed in four decades? The presentation will document the scientific progress of implantology since its foundations were laid, tracing the development of the dental implant from the humble machined screw it was then to the marvel of design that it is today. The science of implantology has also advanced considerably in other aspects, making surgery and prosthodontics extremely practical and less demanding on the practitioner. From computer guided surgery to computer aided design, the involvement of digital age technology is also inescapable and these and other developments will also be discussed.

About the Faculty:

Dr.Nitish Surathu is currently an Associate Professor of Periodontics in Chennai, India. He is an active practitioner and has lectured nationally and internationally on several platforms, having made presentations in several countries in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He has presented at Europerio 5 in Spain, Europe’s largest periodontal meeting to date, Biennial conferences of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology in Malaysia, China and the Philippines and the World Congress of Oral Implantology 6 in the USA. Dr Surathu is also an avid author and has several national and international publications to his credit in peer reviewed journals, dental periodicals and internet based sites.

An Executive Council member and India representative of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology, he is also the Joint Secretary of the Indian Society of Periodontology and a member of the Executive Council of the Indian Academy of Osseointegration. He is also actively involved with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and was the first dental practitioner in India to complete the MaxiCourse® in India and be credentialled as an Associate Fellow of the AAID. An acknowledged implantologist, he is also a Fellow and Diplomate of the ICOI (International Congress of Oral Implantologists) and was the first implantologist in South India to be thus credentialled. Dr Surathu is additionally a Nobel Biocare Fellowship Program Mentor in India.

His active interest in continuing dental education has seen him lecture on several courses and he is reputed for his teaching style that has seen several hundred dentists incorporate advanced dentistry into their practice, particularly with reference to implantology, periodontics and aesthetic dentistry. He is involved with several continuing education providers and travels widely, teaching various professional groups in intensive courses. His courses have seen active attendance not only in India, but also in Nepal, Sri Lanka and the UAE.
